Griffin is an Internationally recognized visual artist, based out of Oakland, California, whose work spans a variety of mediums, themes & surfaces.
Sean Griffin aka Griffin One
I like to create my own Mythology with my work, whether the final artwork is illustrative, abstract & or character driven, each piece tells a unique dream-scape story somewhere between time, function, the familiar & unknown! The fusion of our modern technological age, embodied in design and form; counter-balanced with nature and elements of the Old World - are central themes that emerge in the majority of my work. Finding that unique balance of composition, & flow, Amongst the chaos - is what inspires me most!
Griffin was born in Nairobi, Kenya. He moved to the US as a child, and grew up in Sedona Arizona. His lucid visual style and continuing exploration of new forms of expression are influenced by a wanderlust that was instilled in him from a young age.
An Oakland-based artist of many mediums & themes, Griffin is an aerosol muralist, fine artist, illustrator & designer. His work fuses elements from our modern technological age with motifs from the old world. Whether it's through landscapes, character-driven pieces, or abstract works, each of his pieces is a dreamscape story somewhere between time, function, the familiar, and the unknown!
Griffin’s graffiti / street-art roots stretch back to the mid-90s; and to this day, he is drawn to creating large-scale aerosol murals, that have been seen around the US and at high-profile cultural events internationally. In his most recent “Know Matter What” canvas series, Griffin uses multiple mediums to visually infuse organic elements into industrial compositions, to create surreal settings that are windows into alternate worlds.
(The Longer Version )
Griffin was born in Nairobi, Kenya. He came to the US with his family as a child & grew up in Sedona, AZ. Griffin's wanderlust continues to this day, and his life experiences are reflected in his lucid visual style and continuing exploration of new forms of expression. He has lived in Seattle, San Diego, Louisville, Phoenix & now resides in Oakland. Through each of these urban areas, along with his travels abroad, he has assimilated elements of culture & style, sharing & influencing his artistic expression & vision through his artwork.
An artist of many mediums & themes, Griffin is part Aerosol Muralist, Fine Artist, illustrator & Digital Designer. The body of his work incorporates a fusion of elements from our modern technological age with motifs from the old world, whether it's through his lettering, character driven pieces & or more abstract work. He weaves such themes through a seamless use of form, movement & composition.
He is often drawn to creating large-scale aerosol productions & public murals, that transform and enhance what might be seen as an otherwise dull environment - in places where diverse audiences have an opportunity to interact with the subject matter. Griffin’s graffiti roots stretch back to the mid-90's Seattle's golden era. And since then, he has continued to pioneer the aerosol mural art-form - in many historic sections of cities where no public aerosol murals have yet existed. He has also participated in painting, in areas that are well-established hubs of the scene world-wide.
Griffin is one of the early Pioneers of the Live Art movement, from his start in the early 2000 while living & amerced in the San Diego Electronic, D&B, Hip Hop, Dj Music scene. He has also helped to break the Ice in European live artistry, while painting live during an extended hip-hop Tour with Awol One & The Insects in 2008.
